History

The New Synagogue of Česká Lípa replaced an older building destroyed in the fire of 1820. The new temple was built between 1863 and 1864 according to Josef Goldbach's plans in Neo-Romanesque style with Moorish elements. During the so-called Kristallnacht of 10–11 November 1938 the synagogue was burnt to ground.
This small monument was unveiled on 26 November 2008 in the presence of representatives of the town of Česká Lípa and the Jewish communities of Prague and Děčín. The artwork was created shortly after the end of World War II (in 1945 or 1948), but it was not installed. After its discovery in the depository of a stonemason, the stele was erected in the symbolic place where the Česká Lípa New Synagogue used to stand.
